Torre delle Milizie
& Mercati di Traiano
Torre delle Milizie, the red-brick tower rises above the Mercati di Traiano (Markets of Trajan). Built in the 13th century, it was owned by several of the warring families that dominated medieval Rome.
According to popular belief, Emperor Augustus is buried under the Torre delle Milizie. It was for long known as Nero’s Tower, from the tradition that from its top Nero watched Rome burning.
The original height of the tower is uncertain, but following the earthquake of 1348, the top two floors were demolished, reducing the structure to its present height of approximately 50 metres (160 ft). The 1348 earthquake also resulted in the slight tilting of the structure.
Situated on Via dei Fori Imperiali, Trajan's Market is an archaeological complex that currently holds the Museum of Imperial Forums (Museo dei Fori Imperiali). It is considered to be Rome’s first “shopping center”.
The surviving buildings and structures, built as an integral part of Trajan's Forum and nestled against the excavated flank of the Quirinal Hill, present a living model of life in the Roman capital and a glimpse at the restoration in the city, which reveals new treasures and insights about Ancient Roman architecture.
Thought to be the world's oldest shopping mall, the arcades in Trajan's Market are now believed by many to be administrative offices for Emperor Trajan. The shops and apartments were built in a multi-level structure and it is still possible to visit several of the levels. Highlights include delicate marble floors and the remains of a library.
Scene in JOJO: Bucciarati and others were caught up by the helicopter driven by Cioccolata and Secco. Giorno trapped the helicopter and defeated Cioccolata (Green Day) on the roof of the Torre delle Milizie.
